How to Clean Moissanite Jewelry at Home
Moissanite does not cloud or change colour over time, but everyday life leaves a film of skin oil, lotion and soap on the stone. That film is what makes a stone look dull. The good news: a few minutes of gentle cleaning brings the sparkle straight back.
What you need
- A small bowl of warm (not hot) water
- A few drops of mild, fragrance-free washing-up liquid
- A soft toothbrush, such as a baby toothbrush
- A soft, lint-free cloth
Step by step
- Soak briefly. Place the piece in the soapy water for a few minutes to loosen residue.
- Brush the stone, gently. Brush the stone from the front and, most importantly, from underneath, where lotion builds up. Use light pressure on the metal.
- Rinse. Rinse under clean lukewarm water. Close the sink plug first.
- Dry completely. Pat dry with the soft cloth and let the piece air-dry fully before storing it.
Caring for plated and sterling silver settings
The stone is very hard (9.25 on the Mohs scale), but plating is a thin surface finish and needs gentler treatment. To keep white gold or 14K gold plating looking its best:
- Avoid abrasive cleaners, toothpaste and silver dips.
- Put jewelry on after perfume, hairspray and lotion, and take it off before swimming, bathing, cleaning or exercise.
- Avoid chlorine and salt water.
- Store each piece separately in a soft pouch so harder pieces cannot scratch it.
Should you use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner?
Moissanite itself can handle them, but we do not recommend ultrasonic or steam cleaners for plated jewelry or for pieces with many small set stones, such as halos, pavé bands and flower clusters. Strong vibration and heat can wear plating and loosen small stones over time. The soap-and-brush method is all you need.
How often?
Wipe your jewelry with a soft cloth after wearing it, and give it a gentle soak and brush every few weeks, or whenever it starts to look less bright.
