What to check before you buy

• Chain length. As a guide, 45 cm sits at the collarbone, 50 cm just below it, 55 cm at the top of the chest and 60 cm at mid-chest. Measure a chain you already own, laid flat, including the clasp.
• Carat figures. Check whether a listed weight is for the centre stone or for all the stones together; some pieces list a total.
• Finish. Plated finishes stay bright longest if you put your necklace on after perfume and lotion.
