For the nut or bolt that a normal socket just spins on. Tap the extractor onto the rounded head, then turn anticlockwise: the reverse spiral inside bites harder the more you turn.

Pick the size that needs a light tap to go on. Once used, an extractor can be hard to remove from the bolt head, so knock it out from behind.
